Port of Harlingen Celebrates Installation of Fonroche Solar Lighting

Harlingen, Texas — The Port of Harlingen is proud to announce the completed installation of 100 Fonroche solar-powered lights, enhancing visibility, safety, and sustainability throughout key port roadways and access areas.

The new Fonroche lighting provides dependable, grid-free illumination powered entirely by solar energy, improving nighttime conditions for commercial trucks, port employees, and the surrounding community. By operating independently from the electrical grid, the system delivers consistent lighting while reducing long-term energy costs and environmental impact.

This project was made possible through a $7 million Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Seaport Connectivity Program Grant, which funded 75 percent of the total cost. This investment reflects the Port of Harlingen and TxDOT’s commitment to smart infrastructure solutions that enhance safety while supporting sustainable operations. The addition of solar lighting ensures the port is better equipped to support increased activity and extended operating hours.

Fonroche Lighting is a global leader in autonomous solar-powered lighting solutions, delivering durable, energy-efficient illumination for ports, roadways, and industrial facilities worldwide. Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, the company’s innovative technology supports safety, sustainability, and long-term cost savings.

To celebrate this milestone, the Port of Harlingen will host a ribbon cutting event on February 17 at 5:30 p.m., featuring remarks from Walker Smith, Port Director; Alan Johnson, Port of Harlingen Commission Chairman; Javier De Leon, President/CEO of the Greater Chamber of Harlingen; GeirEilif Kalhagen, Director of the Maritime Division at the Texas Department of Transportation; and Hocine Benaoum, CEO of Fonroche Lighting America. Guests are invited to come celebrate with us, enjoy food from a local food truck, and connect with our partners.
